When I first discovered these custom moulded masks, I was impressed by the concept, but distressed by the price.
"Who's going to pay nearly $1500 for a cpap mask?" I asked. "It's not worth it when I can buy one for under $300"
That was about 4 years ago - four years of struggling with cpap masks that are almost perfect, but not quite. And it is this 'not quite' that continues to ruin some perfectly good nights of sleep.
So when Scott from Acurest offered to mould me a mask, I wasn't anywhere as dismissive of the price as I had been 4 years back. I wanted to see if it really was a perfect fit.
Three weeks after my 45 minutes of moulding with the warm goo and dental impression paste, Scott showed up to our office with my new mask in hand - fancy plastic case and name badge included. I did the nonchalant thing for a few minutes, then grabbed the mask for an immediate trial (at nearly $1500 I wanted to know, NOW)
It fit, perfectly, immediately, with next to no headgear pressure - like a glove. (OK, maybe the wrong analogy for your face, but it really did match the exact contours of my face) I have now used my TrueFit mask for the last three weeks, with great results, and a much lower leak rate than on my previous masks.
Positives - great fit, very stable (I'm a roller), soft on the face with minimal headgear pressure, no pressure on the bridge of my nose, very easy to clean. And the air relief is so quiet and disperses the air so effectively that I can actually cuddle my partner's back without getting the usual elbow into the ribs.
Negatives - $1450 to get one, headgear is not perfect (I changed mine), and I needed a minor adjustment to the seal because it fit too accurately (explained beforehand, so I knew what was needed). Also tickles my moustache hair every now and then.
As many of you know, I use a full face mask, and the TrueFit mask is a nasal mask only. I have been using a chin strap with my mask to keep my mouth shut, and have found it works well for me (at 14 to 16cm pressure levels).
Summary - well worth considering if you can afford it. It's the best fit and most overall comfort I have had yet in a nasal cpap mask.
